Five years later, Clancy attempted to buy the Minnesota Vikings. Although he had reached an agreement in principle to purchase the club from Vikings CEO John Skoglund, his marital situation began to crumble, necessitating the withdrawal of his offer. Ultimately, Red McCombs purchased the Vikings.
Clancy has been known for his libertarian conservative political bent. He has repeated espoused that one of the main reasons for the September 11 attack came from the gutting of the Central Intelligence Agency. Never know to fall in lock step with other conservatives, Clancy remained critical of George W. Bush and his reactions to the 9/11 attacks.
