Now known through the world as P. Diddy, Sean John Combs has amassed an empire with a new worth touted at $1,019,860,000. Born in Harlem, New York, P. Diddy`s metamorphosis from rapper to singer to record producer to actor and then to entrepreneur has reflected the growing cash cow of his brand. Along that path, his changing moniker has reflected his multi-faceted nature. From Puff Daddy, to P. Diddy to Diddy, Sean Combs raked in bling, cash, women and accolades like a storm trooper.
He maintains his position as a musical tycoon after he captured three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards during his performance hey day. His clothing line has earned praise by clinching a Council of Fashion Designers of America award.
He got his start in the record business after a short stint at Uptown Records right out of Howard University before founding his own label called Bad Boy Records in 1993. His tenure there included producing the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Lil` Kim and Usher – just to name a few. He worked with Aretha Franklin, TLC and Boyz II Men as his empire started to sprout. That growing process included some hitches along the way.
Both P. Diddy and Notorious B.I.G. got into a transcontinental name-calling rivalry with Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight of Death Row Records. Combs and The Notorious B.I.G. were criticized and parodied by the West Coast rapper in songs and interviews during the mid-1990s. Some believe that Tupac`s and Notorious` deaths are related to that dust up.
His gansta days were just unfolding. While he was dating Jennifer Lopez, P. Diddy was involved in a New York club fracas that resulted in Combs being charged with aggravated assault. The issue was whether he handed off a gun to one of his handlers. The jury didn`t think so in the end so Diddy went back to pure making money.
In 2002, he was featured on Fortune Magazine`s “40 under 40” and worked his way onto the Forbes list of richest people in America. He has been recognized as the No.1 richest person in hip-hop.
He has appeared on reality televisions shows, movies, Broadway plays and guest television appearances. His clothing line serves as his flagship for fashion, style and couture. He owns an upscale restaurant in Atlanta called Justin`s – named after his son.
In 2008, Hollywood recognized Combs contributions to the arts by presenting him with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
