Even though he appears as a buffoon, Rowan Atkinson studied hard during his college days to know what he is doing. With an electrical engineering degree from Oxford University, the British actor has gone on a comedic career that has him bumbling through scene after scene as some sort of incompetent being with the facial expressions that highlight every dilemma that he encounters.
Growing up on a farm with two brothers provided him with the stability and confidence to do anything. His breakout in the entertainment industry came as a result of his writing and appearance on the satirical “Not the Nine O'Clock News.” The show was a British version of Saturday Night Live, featuring skit comedy scenes on current events. The shows success earned Atkinson a variety of awards including an Emmy, and a performer of the year award in Britain.
Although Atkinson has dabbled in silver screen appearances, his real passion is in fast cars. He owns a stable of vintage race cars and has some of the fastest cars produced on earth. His collection includes, Austin Martins, MacLarens, Rolls-Royces and Jaguars. He belongs to several car clubs and writes a column for a British car magazine.
His love for fast cars has translated into a competitive spirit. Like other celebrities, Atkinson has been participating in Top Gear Challenges to see which celeb can record the fastest lap time around a sanctioned course in a predetermined car. Piloting a Kia Cee’d, Atkinson now sits on top of the leaderboard with a time of 1:42.2, besting the likes of Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg. Atkinson arrived at the course in a V16-powered Rolls-Royce Phantom, a vehicle he was granted the rights to use through Rolls-Royce for one of his upcoming roles.
