When women see Patrick Dempsey these days, they don't envision him as a clown. But if Dempsey had had his way early in his entertainment life, he would have ended up performing in the circus instead of on television and the silver screen as a wavy-haired heartthrob. Dempsey took up juggling during his high school days and became so proficient at it that he began entering competitions. Luckily, his acting skills took over and now all he juggles is the multiple film and television offers he receives.
The Buckfield, Maine native enjoyed participating in theater early in his life. It seems his acting came naturally as he appeared on stage by the time he was 15, playing the son in the play, On Golden Pond. He branched out in the theater again in another play Torch That Song that traveled to San Francisco and played well there for many weeks. With his exposure to the West Coast, Dempsey became intrigued in pursuing a film career so he started to mine the auditions in the L.A. Area.
Dempsey got cast exactly how he looked. A good-looking, fun-loving young man with charisma. He appeared in a series of films that featured younger men in pursuit of older women. The 21-year-old Dempsey ended up mirroring his characters by marrying a woman more than twice his age – Rocky Parker also happened to be his acting coach. The film offers and diverse opportunities continued as Dempsey portrayed a variety of characters in film and on television.
By 1994, he and Parker had slipt and Dempsey was spending more time in front of television cameras in guest spots. As his exposure grew so did his roles. From one time appearances to reoccurring roles, producers, directors and critics began to see how Dempsey's characters added fans to a shows numbers. Ultimately, Dempsey scored his biggest television role with the uber-popular medical series Grey's Anatomy.
His role on Grey's as a dark-haired heartthrob with charisma has managed to push that series through multiple season of renewal as others have been cast aside.
