Mary Ann Murphy is a ballroom dance champion, but did not became famous for her dancing skills. Even though her dancing expertise contributed to her fame, she is now mainly known for her role as judge and choreographer in the reality television show “So You Think You Can Dance”.
Murphy’s ancestry mainly consists of Irish, however she was born in Lancaster, Ohio. Mary Murphy graduated from the Northwest High School in Ohio. She then went to the University in Ohio and got her degree in physical education.
Soon after her education, Murphy moved to Washington and found a job as a dancing instructor. She did not become the success she is today until she met Manfred Stiglitz in the Open Championships in England. The two talented dancers formed a duo and started to compete, they became the Australian National Champions in 1990 and 1991.
Murphy also starred in movies as a danced double and dancer. Some of the movies she has starred in is “Something to Talk About” and “Dance with me”. She started as an original guest judge of “So You Think You Can Dance” in 2005. However, Murphy did not become a permanent judge until season 3. Next to her role as judge, Murphy also runs her own dance studio and frequently organizes a Los Angeles dance competition. She is not only a judge in “So You Think You Can Dance”, because she still judges several ballroom championships all across the United States.
Mary Murphy also has a quite intriguing personal life. The famous dancer and choreographer was married three times and is also a survivor of domestic abuse. Even though Murphy announced her first husband physically and mentally abused her during her first marriage, her first husband still denies the allegations.
